The Oktoberfest, or Wiesn, is now celebrated in cities all over the world, but the original is and remains in Munich. After a two-year break, it's finally starting up again and the city is already in the starting blocks. From the 17th of September to the 3rd of October, you can experience the spectacle. Secure a table in one of the marquees as early as possible and get ready for the best party of the year with our tips.
Travel to Wiesn Munich
Munich is easy to reach by plane, train or car and has excellent connections.

When you arrive in Munich, your main port of call is the Theresienwiese, where the annual Oktoberfest has been held since 1810. It is located in the Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt district and is therefore very central. Munich's main railway station is just over 20 minutes away on foot.

Rides and Rollercoasters Munich Oktoberfest
There are more than 20 rides at the Wiesn, so there's something for everyone. Whether it's a Ferris wheel, a chain carousel or a real roller coaster, you'll find it all here.
We have put together our highlights for you:
- Calypso: Today called the Break Dancer, this ride was called Calypso in the sixties and here you will find the last original copy. It brings back nostalgia. You sit in a gondola that rotates around two axles and sits on an inclined disc. Is that not enough for you? Then dare to try the Break Dancer.
- The Wellenflug: The chain carousel is a classic and therefore a must at this fair. What's special about the Wellenflug are the uphill and downhill rides simulated by a wave-like spinning motion.
- Menzels Münchner Zugspitzbahn: Here you also sit in one of many gondolas that swing freely sideways and are therefore movable. All the gondolas swing in a circle and your ride will be a rapid up and down.
- The Krinoline: Another classic is the crinoline, a carousel with brass band from the twenties. It is the last original of its kind and can only be found at the Munich Oktoberfest.
The Right Outfit
You've probably already guessed, but to have a real, unique Wiesn experience, of course, you have to come in traditional costume, called Trachten. For men, this is usually leather trousers (Lederhosen) and a white or checked shirt. For women, there is the Dirndl, a traditional dress that is still worn a lot in typical Bavarian regions.
When wearing a dirndl, there are a few rules you should follow as a woman. Namely, where you tie the bow of your apron has significance:
- Left: You are single
- Middle Front: You are a virgin
- Right: You are taken
- Middle Back: You are widowed
Nowadays, there are a lot of options for upgrading your traditional costume and making it more modern. Be creative and find your very own look in the Trachten.
What else you should know
The beverage of the Wiesn is beer - so be aware that everyone will drink a lot of alcohol at the Oktoberfest, so it can sometimes get a bit noisy and chaotic. But everyone is there to have a good time, which is why the atmosphere is usually very boisterous.
In the tent, you can sway to the music. You won't be alone for long, you'll quickly strike up a conversation with your table mates and by the next hit, you'll be swaying and warbling along together.
Don't forget to eat something in between. Most tents have snacks like pretzels.
