What's the best time of year for a girls' trip?

It depends on the destination. For a summer beach trip, the Greek islands and Costa del Sol peak in June and September (cheaper and quieter than July–August). For a city break with Christmas markets, Krakow, Bordeaux and Newcastle are at their best in late November and December. For winter sun, the Canaries and Dubai are the only realistic options between December and February.

How long should a girls' trip be?

1. Costa del Sol, Spain

Great for: beach + nightlife on a budget
Flight time from London: ~2h 50min direct to Malaga (LHR, LGW, STN, LTN). British Airways, easyJet, Jet2, Vueling and Wizz Air all fly the route.

The Costa del Sol works for a girls' trip because it has the resort infrastructure of Ibiza at roughly half the price. Marbella has the beach clubs (Nikki Beach, Ocean Club), Benalmadena has the cheaper bars and the Selwo Marina, and Malaga itself is genuinely worth a city day for the Picasso Museum (free for under-18s) and the restored Roman theatre next to the cathedral. Andalusia charges no regional tourist tax in 2026, which closes the price gap further.

Most beaches are free. A sunlounger and umbrella runs €5–8 a day. A typical menú del día lunch is €13–17 a person including a drink, and beach-club day passes start around €30 in Marbella and €15 in Benalmadena.

2. Newcastle, England

Great for: a UK weekend with a proper night out
Travel from London: ~3 hours by LNER train direct from King's Cross, from £40 each way booked in advance. Newcastle Airport also has direct flights from most UK regional hubs.

Newcastle is the budget UK option that doesn't feel like a compromise. The Quayside has been redeveloped well, the bars on Osborne Road in Jesmond are where locals actually drink, and a night out costs around half what the equivalent night in London would. Tynemouth Beach is 25 minutes by Metro from the centre and is genuinely a beach you'd choose to visit, not a fallback.

Eldon Square covers the high-street shops, Grainger Market does the indie/vintage end, and brunch at Quay Ingredient or Pink Lane Coffee runs about £10–14 a head. Day trip option: Alnwick Castle (45 min by train) for the Harry Potter filming locations, or the Northumberland coast for Bamburgh.

Rhodes is the cheapest of the major Greek islands for a group, mostly because it has more hotel inventory than Mykonos or Santorini and isn't a fashionable name. Faliraki has the party strip (Bar Street is the loud option, the beach itself is wide and family-friendly during the day). Lindos, 50 minutes south, is the photogenic side: white-cube houses on a hillside under an Acropolis. Rhodes Old Town is a UNESCO site and worth a half-day for the medieval walls and the Palace of the Grand Master.

A taverna meal with mezze and house wine for four runs €60–80. Sunbeds on Tsambika or Anthony Quinn beach are €10 a pair.

Glasgow is the live-music capital of the UK by a clear margin. King Tut's Wah Wah Hut famously gave Oasis their first record deal and still books strong indie bills. The OVO Hydro is the country's busiest arena outside London. The Barrowlands is on every touring band's wishlist for the floor that bounces. If your group has anyone music-obsessed, this is the trip.

Buchanan Street is the high-street shopping strip, Princes Square (in the centre) is the upmarket arcade, and Livingston Designer Outlet (45 min by train) is the discount shopping option. Bars in Finnieston and the West End for evenings in. Day trip: Loch Lomond, 45 min by train.

For food: a francesinha (Porto's local toasted sandwich) at Café Santiago is €11. A long lunch at Cantinho do Avillez or any tasca in the Ribeira will run €25–35 a head. The Douro river boat trip is overpriced if you take the standard 50-minute tourist version; book a half-day boat with lunch from Régua instead.

Krakow is the cheapest hen-do destination in Europe that doesn't feel like a compromise. A round of cocktails in the Old Town is around 60–80 zł (£12–16). Pierogi at Pierogarnia Krakowiacy is 25–35 zł (£5–7). Hotels in the Old Town are 30–40% cheaper than equivalents in Prague or Budapest. The square (Rynek Główny) is the largest medieval square in Europe and lit up at night looks the part.

Beyond the obvious: the Wieliczka Salt Mine (45 min from the city) is a genuinely unusual day trip, chapels carved entirely from salt, 130m underground. Auschwitz-Birkenau is 1.5 hours away if your group wants the historical context; not a casual trip but worth knowing it's accessible.

8. Bordeaux, France

Great for: a wine-focused weekend with style

9. Tours, France

Great for: the slow alternative to Bordeaux

Tours is the unfashionable choice on this list and is included on purpose. It's the gateway to the Loire Valley châteaux, Chenonceau (built across a river), Chambord (the most photographed) and Amboise (Leonardo da Vinci is buried there). A guided day tour from Tours to all three runs €60–80 per person.

The cycling trail along the Loire (the "Loire à Vélo") is flat, well-marked, and runs through the wine villages of Vouvray and Chinon. Bike rentals from €15/day. Les Halles, the covered market, is the best food shop in the region for picking up cheese and bread for picnics.

If your group is more "long lunches and a slower pace" than "beach clubs and bottomless brunch," Tours is the right call. If you want city energy, pick Bordeaux instead.

10. Singapore

Great for: the long-haul food trip

English is the working language, the public transport works, food is consistently excellent at every price point, and the city is small enough to cover in 4 days. Gardens by the Bay (the Cloud Forest dome and Supertree Grove) is the headline attraction; book the dome tickets in advance. Marina Bay Sands SkyPark for sunset drinks is the standard but it works.

For food: hawker centres are the experience to prioritise over the Michelin restaurants. Maxwell Food Centre and Lau Pa Sat are the two to know, a meal of Hainanese chicken rice, char kway teow and a fresh juice runs S$15–20 (£9–12). For one upmarket meal, Burnt Ends does a more interesting menu than the standard tasting-menu options. ATLAS in the Parkview Square building is the best bar in the city for one statement nightcap.

Miami works for a group that wants beach days and serious nightlife in the same trip. South Beach is the beach with the Art Deco buildings behind it; Mid-Beach is calmer and where most of the better hotels are; North Beach is locals and quieter. The water is warm enough to swim from November through April, which is when the weather is best (summer is hot and storm-prone).

For nightlife: LIV at the Fontainebleau is the headline club but it's expensive and you'll queue. The smaller bars in Wynwood (the arts district, 15 minutes from the beach) are usually a better night out for groups under 30. Calle Ocho in Little Havana does the Cuban food and the salsa bars; Versailles is the institution.

12. New York, USA

Great for: a 4-day city break with everything in it

New York is the most expensive destination on this list per night but the dollar-to-pound rate makes it less punishing than it used to be, and a group of 3–4 splitting an Airbnb in Lower Manhattan can land at roughly the same per-person cost as a Singapore trip.

The brunch culture is genuinely a thing, Jack's Wife Freda, Sadelle's and Russ & Daughters are the safe choices, all bookable. For one upmarket dinner, Carbone is the Instagram option; Don Angie or Lilia in Brooklyn are better food. The non-negotiable activity is a private boat day around the island, €400–600 for a small group of 4–6 for a half-day, including the Blue Grotto if conditions allow (it's weather-dependent and queues badly with the public boats). The chairlift to Monte Solaro from Anacapri is €14 return and gives you the best photo of the trip.

For lunch, Da Paolino is set in a lemon grove and is the photo restaurant; book at least a month in advance. For evening, Anema e Core is a live-music cabaret venue (not a club) where the atmosphere builds over the course of the night, Italian celebrities turn up regularly. Dress code is real.

14. Santorini, Greece

Great for: the photo trip

Santorini is the most photographed island in Europe for good reason but it's also the busiest. The Oia sunset is the famous shot; arrive at least 90 minutes before sunset for a usable spot, or skip it entirely and watch from a restaurant terrace in Imerovigli instead (better light, fewer people).

The volcanic-caldera boat tour with hot springs and a stop at Thirassia is the half-day everyone does, €40–60 a head for the standard option, €150 for a private catamaran. Red Beach is closed for swimming in 2026 due to rockfall risk; Vlychada and Perissa are the practical alternatives, both with black volcanic sand.

For dinner, Metaxi Mas in Exo Gonia is consistently the best meal on the island and books up two months ahead. 1800 in Oia is the "view" dinner; the food is fine, the view is what you're paying for. Koo Club in Fira is the late-night option but the island doesn't really do nightlife in the Mykonos sense.

15. Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Great for: a winter long-haul trip with luxury infrastructure

Don't book the cheapest one, the operators using older 4×4s have noticeable issues.

For dinner: Pierchic (on a pier off the Madinat Jumeirah, Burj Al Arab in the background) is the photo restaurant; the food is good, not exceptional. Zuma is more interesting if your group prefers a Tokyo-style izakaya feel.
